About book Das Labyrinth Der Träumenden Bücher (2011)
As much as I loved the original, this one is a letdown. I really can't say much good about it.Most of the book is background information rather than story and one has to argue if the readers really has to know these details at all. Some of it recaptures the first book, but there is very little actual new story to find. It ends with the promise of a third part that finally dives into the story.I feel the author hasn't done himself or his readers any favors this time around.If you want to read a great book, read the first part and avoid this one. This book is, to my knowledge, the only sequel that Moers has written to any of his other books set in the fantastical world of Zammonia. And to be honest, it shows a little bit. Part of the reason that I enjoy his books so much is because of his talents in world-building. Every other book of his is just full of tons of interesting details about the inhabitants of his world and their philosophies, languages, science, art, etc. All of his other books are not related in any way except for being set in the same land, Zammonia, so the world-building can start roughly from scratch each time, allowing him to invent another entirely new set of details to populate the world. But since this book is a sequel, most of the world-building has been done already. We spend most of the book catching up with Optimus Yarnspinner and the two hundred years of his life that have passed, as well as a lot of time exploring the rebuilt Bookholm. But there is just not that much to explore, in my opinion. Maybe it's just that the fantastical setting of Bookholm loses something when we return to it, even though Moers takes ample time assuring us how different it now is.And ultimately, that could be the problem with this book. It spends so much time establishing how different the setting is that there isn't much time left for a plot. And there really is no plot. We just follow Yarnspinner around Bookholm as he alternates between self-recrimination over his increasing irrelevance and amazement at everything that Bookholm has to offer. The book just moved too slowly to really capture my attention with new-and-improved Bookholm.
