Jack, que está às vésperas de seu casamento, nunca teve um bom relacionamento com Craig e o detestava por sua empáfia e sua dedicação excessiva ao trabalho. Ele se desloca de Nova Iorque até Boston na tentativa de elucidar o caso. Porém, ao chegar lá o julgamento já está acontecendo e logo ele começa a sofrer ameaças constantes do advogado de acusação, Fasano. Com o avançar de suas investigações, Jack verá que está mexendo em uma caixa de marimbondos e, quando finalmente conseguir que a verdade venha a tona, fará uma grande reviravolta em todo o processo.Comecei esse livro sem muita pretensões, achando que seria mais um romance policial. Com o decorrer da leitura, me vi fisgado pela história, não conseguindo mais largá-lo antes do final. Talvez pela minha afinidade com a área médica ou pela narrativa do autor, que consegue ser ágil e ao mesmo tempo detalhista. O enredo mostra os bastidores de um processo médico e o julgamento de Craig é contado desde a ocorrência até o seu desfecho. A maneira como ocorre o julgamento e tudo o que está envolvido a ele é o ponto alto desse livro.O começo da leitura é um pouco parada. Robin nos introduz aos personagens e ao caso em si, que servirá de linha condutora de toda a história, e por conta disso traz parágrafos longos e descrições gigantes. Porém, recomendo que o leitor insista um pouco nesse momento, pois com o avançar da leitura o enredo fica frenético até o final. Apesar de ser o sexto livro de uma série, ele é independente, ou seja, em nada interfere não ter lido os livros anteriores para o entendimento da história. Percebe-se que alguns fatos da vida pessoal do Jack ocorreram no passado, provavelmente em outros livros, mas fora isso, toda a história tem começo, meio e fim.Esse é meu primeiro contato com thrillers médicos. Já li um livro anterior a esse que se enquadrava nessa categoria, A Garota Silenciosa (cuja resenha você confere aqui), mas ele trazia pouquíssimos elementos desse gênero e por isso o considerei apenas como um thriller, no máximo um thriller policial. Em Crise, temos o fator médico sendo permeado o tempo todo, uma vez que essa é a profissão dos protagonistas e a medicina tem papel fundamental para tudo o que está acontecendo. As descrições das patologias, as nomenclaturas científicas, o uso de instrumentação adequada, tudo foi feito de forma excepcional pelo autor, que é médico e tem Doutorado em Patologia Forense pela Universidade de Harvard. Em virtude disso, percebe-se um forte domínio na escrita desse tipo de livro.Recomendo a todos que gostem de thrillers médicos e que tenham curiosidade em ler algo do autor.http://capaetitulo.blogspot.com.br/20...
At the risk of being CRITICAL, let me just state that Robin Cook’s novel CRISIS is convoluted enough, and has more than enough medical mumbo-jumbo to place it at the top of your list of books most likely to put you into a COMA.With CRITICAL he took us into the arena of hotel-like specialized private hospitals that are in fact stockholder owned big businesses. In CRISIS we once again visit the dark side of medicine, this time examining the system known as “concierge medicine” where doctors are paid an upfront membership fee that insures the patient of “extras” such as 24 hour access to your doctor, same day appointments for the very ill and house calls when you are too ill to come into the office. (I am old enough to remember when these “concierge” offerings, now deemed as “extras” requiring additional payment, were standards services your family doctor provided to all of his patients). The other ogre rearing its ugly head in CRISIS is that of medical malpractice suits. Cook has created a scenario in which there are very few “good guys”. The doctor accused of malpractice comes across as a greedy, self-absorbed creep; the trial lawyers are of the slimy “win at any cost” mindset and the plaintiff employs his own hired muscle in his attempt to achieve his ends. Just about the only characters with morals or values are Jack the medical examiner, his sister Alexis and Jacks fiancée Laurie. Jacks investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the plaintiffs’ wife is a long and boring read and his findings and the ultimate conclusion of the story come right out of left field.In my opinion, there is little reason to recommend this book be added to your “books to read” list.
Do You like book Crisis (2006)?
After reading a few of Robin Cook's novels, I have come to the conclusion that he is not a very good writer. From a technical standpoint, his prose is very flawed. His dialogue is weak and doesn't resemble real conversations. In this novel, his characters are exceptionally weak and not remotely believable. Their actions don't match their motivations. The worst of the characters is Dr. Craig Bowman, who is sort of the main character in this novel. Not only is he inconsistent as a character, but he is also not at all likeable. None of the characters in this novel are likeable, even Dr. Jack Stapleton, who I think is supposed to be the most sympathetic of the characters.The novel starts off with a patient of Bowman who dies of an apparent heart attack. Bowman is then sued by the patient's husband. Stapleton has had no contact with his sister, who is Bowman's wife, for over a decade, yet when she calls him to help out with the malpractice lawsuit against Bowman, he drops everything and goes to Boston to help even though he is getting married in less than a week. That is so preposterous and unbelievable, yet is very typical of all the characters' inconsistencies. Bowman, who had left his wife for another woman at the time of the patient's death, is now back with his wife. She is supporting him even though he dumped her and they don't seem to like each other at all.The only redeemable aspect of this novel is that the storyline following the malpractice trial is fairly interesting and entertaining. On that basis, it was a readable novel, but it wasn't very good and got progressively worse as it went along.Carl Alves - author of Blood Street

As others have said, more of a courtroom drama, but I didn't mind that. The plot was fine. The dialogue was convoluted and highly improbable, giving me a very odd idea of the author's home life if that is what passes for normal conversation in his world. One of the characters managed to use "antipode" in conversation, not a word you see often, never mind hear. At one point someone who wants to get out of court to talk outside actually says to their brother, "let us leave this magisterial environment."It was so odd at times that I started reading the dialogue out to my husband to enjoy too:)
