I began the book hopefully enough. A charming rogue, a witty, but not entirely inexperienced, debutante. But after the first chapter it descended into the same bland, mildly offensive rubbish that seems to be acceptable in historical romances of late. I don't know why, in this day and age, we can't move in from these tired tropes where the maid must be pure, the man barely controlling his lust for her, the man NOT controlling his lust in a way that becomes a little rapey... I don't know. There are so many intriguing characters throughout this time period who weren't teenage girls in their first blush of boring innocence. I think I will leave the regency romances here. I haven't finished tnis book, and probably won't. Any suggestions for other genres to try would be gratefully accepted! This is the first I've read by Ms. Dreiling, and it was very enjoyable. I tend to like the in-love-with-brother's-best-friend trope, and this was pretty well done.The story flowed well and I enjoyed Julianne and Hawk, in spite of some choices they made that veered towards cliche. Ms. Dreiling doesn't let them stew too long and resolves issues in a rational manner. That made this easy to read and easy to like, and kept the characters likable rather than annoying ;)I do look forward to picking up the previous story and the ones that come after!
