Recently, rating books.. I have been a bit generous. This book is probably a 2 1/2.Barb's life is a mess, divorce, reaching 40, husband got kids, underemployed, lonely, missing her NYC and dead father.... she is really a woman in transition. In the midst of all, Barb buys a home, once rented by author of Lolita (Nabokov). Barb finds notes for a book and the story takes off. Some far fetched incidents, underdeveloped characters, but still really quite funny in spots. Was a fast read, so you're not overly invested if you take a chance and read. This started out in a promising way: interesting title, woman we can all identify with who gets the gumption to just leave her critical husband. Reminded me of my first marriage, especially the dishwasher part, so she had me at the first couple of chapters.Next, she hooked me with the possibility of finding Nabokov's hidden book on Babe Ruth -- granted, a long shot, but still, fun to fantasize about. But the plot kind of got kookier and kookier from there on. It would be nice to believe that our heroine could fall into the perfect house in which to establish a brothel in a suburb within driving distance of her home...but the judge who carries a Prada bag and has a special weakness for ...well, I don't want to give it all away.At any rate, it was hard to force myself to finish the book. The final chapters seemed too far-fetched and yes, I know this is fictional, but the fiction has to be plausible.
Do You like book Cleaning Nabakov's House (2000)?
There was humor, there was beautiful writing but there was a extraordinarily predictable plot.
