Τηλεφώνημα για το νεκρόΤο 1984 κυκλοφόρησε από τις εκδόσεις Bell ένας τόμος με τον τίτλο "Ντετέκτιβ Σμάιλυ", που περιέχει τα δυο πρώτα μικρά μυθιστορήματα του Τζον Λε Καρέ, το "Τηλεφώνημα για το νεκρό" και το "Έγκλημα ποιότητας", τα οποία πλέον κυκλοφορούν σε ξεχωριστά βιβλία από τις εκδόσεις Καστανιώτη, με άλλους τίτλους και διαφορετικές μεταφράσεις.Έξι χρόνια μετά το κλασικό και πολύ καλό "Ο κατάσκοπος γύρισε από το κρύο", είπα επιτέλους να διαβάσω ένα βιβλίο του Τζον Λε Καρέ, από τα πάρα πολλά που έχω αγορασμένα. Είπα να διαβάσω το συγκεκριμένο, γιατί είναι το πρώτο του βιβλίο και η πρώτη γνωριμία μας με τον μοναδικό Τζορτζ Σμάιλι. Και γιατί είναι μικρό σε μέγεθος, κατά συνέπεια χωρίς να υπάρχει κίνδυνος να χαθώ σε μια δαιδαλώδη πλοκή γεμάτη μπερδεμένες συνωμοσίες.Ουσιαστικά έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα κατά βάση κατασκοπευτικό μυθιστόρημα, που όμως έχει αστυνομική πλοκή. Ο κάπως κοντός και χοντρούλης αλλά κάργα συμπαθητικός Σμάιλι καλείται να ερευνήσει τις συνθήκες του θανάτου ενός σημαντικού στελέχους του Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών, του Άρθουρ Φέναν. Υποτίθεται ότι ο Φέναν αυτοκτόνησε γιατί πήρε βαριά την συνέντευξη-ανάκριση του Σμάιλι για τις πολιτικές του πεποιθήσεις και γιατί υποτίθεται ότι η καριέρα του καταστράφηκε χάρη στις διαδόσεις για τη φιλική του διάθεση απέναντι στο Κομμουνιστικό Κόμμα. Αυτά έγραψε σ'ένα σημείωμα που βρέθηκε δίπλα του και αυτά είπε η γυναίκα του στον Σμάιλι και την αστυνομία. Μόνο που τα πράγματα δεν είναι έτσι, η συνέντευξη έγινε σε εξαιρετικό κλίμα και ο Σμάιλι μόνο που δεν έγινε κολλητός με τον Φέναν. Φαίνεται ότι κάτι άλλο, ιδιαίτερα βαθύ στον κόσμο των Υπηρεσιών κρύβεται και ο Σμάιλι, με κίνδυνο της ζωής του, θα προσπαθήσει να βγάλει μια άκρη...Η πλοκή δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα σύνθετη ούτε δαιδαλώδης, μπορεί κανείς να την παρακολουθήσει χωρίς να χαθεί η μπάλα. Το βιβλίο είναι σχετικά μικρό και διαβάζεται εύκολα και γρήγορα τόσο χάρη στο μέγεθος του όσο, κυρίως, χάρη στην ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία και την πολύ καλή γραφή. Έχουμε μυστήριο, αποκαλύψεις και λίγη δράση και συνάμα παρακολουθούμε κάποιες σημαντικές στιγμές από την ζωή του Σμάιλι, ενός χαρακτήρα που συμμετέχει σε αρκετά βιβλία του Λε Καρέ. Η γραφή είναι πολύ ωραία και άνετη και η ατμόσφαιρα εξαιρετική.Δεν πρόκειται για αριστούργημα, από την άλλη όμως είναι ένα πολύ καλό κατασκοπευτικό-αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα που θα κρατήσει το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος, θα τον ψυχαγωγήσει για λίγες ώρες και δεν θα τον κουράσει με ατελείωτες περιγραφές και μπερδεμένες συνωμοσίες. Λίαν συντόμως θα πιάσω και το δεύτερο βιβλίο του τόμου.
A couple years ago when I had The Spy Who Came in from the Cold on my reading list I found an inelegantly bound collection of John le Carré novels at a used friends of the library bookstore. The edition contained le Carré's first five novels. I enjoyed The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and forgot about the rest of the novels in the edition until a couple days ago when I was looking for something of a palette cleaners after reading Freedom. Unable for some reason to proceed straight to the new DFW, I decided to check out le Carré's first novel, Call for the Dead.The novel introduces the reader to George Smiley, an unassuming spy who who is the quintessence of whatever antonym of swashbuckling you want to come up with. Smiley, a featured character in several le Carré novels, including a supporting role in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, comes off as a direct counterargument to Ian Fleming's James Bond. There are no neat gadgets or arch-villains in le Carré novels. Instead, le Carré is known for inserting a gritty and disenchanting sense of real into the spy genre. le Carré's protagonists aren't dashing action heroes always ready with a witty retort, but swarthy and underhanded bureaucrats, who rely on an almost Orwellian double speak to get by. Indeed, the most thrilling parts of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold are not fist fights or car chases, but edge of your seat dialogue.Call for the Dead introduces le Carré variation on the genre, and has a few very interesting ideas, but in the the novel end is not able to transcend the constraints of its conventional and mediocre narrative. All spy stories are contain elements of a mystery novel. However, this novel is much more a conventional mystery with elements of spy fiction than The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. The action opens with the apparent suicide of a Foreign Office Employee, a man Smiley had recently met with after an anonymous tip accused him of Communist sympathies. This suicide, motivated by apparent shame over suspected impropriety, surprises Smiley, who was impressed by the dead man and had left him with the impression that he would be cleared of all charges. After an interview with the widow, Smiley becomes convinced that the man's death was not a suicide but a... murder. Much of what reamins is a typical gumshoe detective story, told without the ingenuity of Christie or the wit and elegance of Chandler. However, as the narrative progresses, le Carré begins to develop some of the ideas that he would have fully integrated by the time of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, his third novel. Le Carré is one of the, if not the, greatest novelist of the Cold War. What I mean by that is that he always incorporates a real sense of the diameters of the particular time. The Russians, or East Germans in this case, are not cardboard cutouts of bad guys, but are treated sympathetically. The novel's dead man was a German Jew who escaped before the horrors while his widow is a camp survivor. Smiley served in Germany during the war during which the chief East German spy was an agent of his. The novel's shining points are in how the character's past influences their present motivations. Le Carré writes of the Cold War in context with the rest of 20th Century European history, a perspective that is often missing in other works of fiction. The Holocaust, the bombing of Dresden, the break-up of Germany, and the subsequent rearming of Western Germany influence the narrative, and in turn raise the novel above standard mysteries. For instance, witness the widow's rejection of Smiley's attempted consolation: Take your hands off me! Do you think I'm yours because I don't belong to them? Go away! Go away and kill Freitag and Dieter, keep your game alive Mr. Smiley. But don't think I'm on your side, d'you hear? Because I'm the wandering Jewess, the no-man's land, the battlefield for your toy soldiers.This and other moments provide a glimpse at themes le Carré would later develop on. Unfortunately, they are only a brief respite here. To be sure, what remains is not wholly unentertaining or poorly conceived and executed. Call for the Dead is a decent whodunit/thriller with elements of a unique take on the spy genre thrown in. The problem is that it's not particularly worthwhile.
Do You like book Call For The Dead (2002)?
This is a reread. Probably read it back in the 60ies or 70ies when Iwas really crazy about spy novels. I'm rereading LeCarre's old onesthough. He's good. This one introduces the character of George Smileywho figures in the best of his spy fiction a decade later (Books likeTinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy, The Honorable Schoolboy and Smiley'sPeople).Smiley, an secret intelligence officer , interviews a Foreign Officeofficial about whom his bosses have received an anonymous lettersaying he's a Communist. Smiley likes the guy and finds that there'snothing against him but left leaning in his youth (with manyothers--it was the 1930ies). Then the guy leaves a wake up call for8:30 AM and commits suicide. Or did he? If he really was a spy, Smileymade a huge mistake....

بعد از دیدنِ فیلمِ خوبِ Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy جذب شدم که کتابهای لوکاره با محوریّتِ شخصیّتِ جورج اسمایلی رو بخونم و طبقِ عادتِ گاهی اعصاب خوردکنِ خودم با اوّلین کتاب شروع کردم. اصلاً قابلِ قیاس با قصّهی هوشمندانه و جذّابِ فیلمی که اشاره کردم نبود. واقعاً و به معنای واقعیِ کلمه «دفع»ام کرد؛ تا حدّی که احتمالاً تا مدّتِ زیادی سمتِ کتابهای معمّایی نرم. قصّهی سرراست و نهچندان پیچیدهای داشت که اونقدر درگیرکننده نبود که دلت بخواد بیوقفه بشینی و بخونی و حدس بزنی و تشویش داشته باشی. بهطورِ کلّی: meh!ترجمه و ویراستاری و حتّی جاهایی حروفچینیِ کتاب هم بد و گاهی غیرِ قابلِ تحمّل بود، و این قضیه به هرچه کمتر جذّاببودنِ کتاب کمکِ خیلی زیادی کرده بود!

I have mixed feelings about Le Carre having tried so many times to read him and failing. 'Tinker' was good but "honourable" felt meandering. I read 'spy' a loooong time ago but I'm lookign forward to reading it again. I scored a cheap omnibus on Amazon with his first 6 books!
