A difficult book to read on some levels, a child's death is not what one would really regard as entertainment and in fact I did think that it was handled quite coldly. Having said that (and it wasn't in any way offensive) Bryant dealt with it the way that he deals with all death, a crime that must be solved, a puzzle that must be unwound. it was gripping, of course it was fascinating with facts that one would probably never have come across anywhere else unless Punch and Judy shows or White Witchery are amongst your interest. The ending was as always both satisfying and really as I move through the series and am now one nearer to the end rather sad. I have loved these books. I think I should have read one or two of the first eight books in this series before diving into #9. It was pretty good as mysteries go but I feel like maybe an earlier book might have filled in a bit more of the back story for me. I wouldn't not recommend this book for not having read the first eight but I might recommend something else first but don't infer this is a negative review if you are a fan. It wasn't a time waster and I didn't abandon it half way through and parts of it were amusing and I did learn rather a lot about the history of Punch and Judy that I never even considered.
This book made me want to read all the others in this series.
