Boomer is a dog who wants to go to school for show-and-tell. He goes with his boy owner and they eat lunch, play outside during recess, paint during art, listen during story time, and finally present themselves during show-and-tell. All the kids love Boomer. This would be a silly book to read during the first weeks of school. It's really about all the joys that can be had and found during the school day, so I think this would be a good introduction book to kindergartners or first graders. Students could bring something in the next day after reading this book and have their own show-and-tell (although not an actual pet). Helps build community in the classroom and everyone gets to know one another better.
This is an amazing story to read for the first few days at a new school. Just as Boomer had to be shown around school, students have to be shown around the school. Many people learn better by teaching, so after students have a decent understanding of the school layout have them bring a stuffed animal of choice to show around the school. Incorporate this into writing. Have students share what they thought was important to show their pet and why they felt that was an important part of the school. Students will love to connect the book to life and will enjoy feeling like the tour guide during the day.
A book to read about show-and-tell. Why did he bring Boomer to school? Do you think we would be able to bring our pets to school? Why? What were they learning about in this classroom? Comprehension questions.Writing: If you could bring anything you wanted to school for show and tell, what would it be and why? What do you think would happen at school? A fun book, but not a whole lot of "meat" to it. Kids will enjoy it because of the content, so a good book to include in my classroom library for students who love their dogs.

What child doesn't want to take their dog to school? I know I always wanted to! This book has beautiful and vivid illustrations. After reading this book your students can brainstorm where they would take their favorite animal in the school and then write a story about the day their favorite animal went to school! To make the assignment a bit more challenging you could have them think critically how they animal could get in the school if they had an animal like a giraffe, a bear, a lion or a elephant!
