Written before mobile phone, computers, or the super-modern techy ultra-super forensics police force this novel is superb for research for anyone wanting to get British police procedures correct in the 1950s.The story itself is excellent. Gilbert is a master of plot, red herrings, and good 3D characters. His police are real without being all nasty or all nice. They're human.I really enjoyed the details. When the police divers get kitted up there are no wet suits. The divers have to suck out all the air in their rubber suits themselves and wear lots of layers of wooly clothing under the rubber suit. Amazing!Even if you don't care about history or research this is still a book to read and enjoy. Gilbert always was a master story teller.
