I wasn't a huge fan of Darren Shan's Saga of Darren Shan (hasn't got much of an ego has he?). I thought Cirque Du Freak was too short and undeveloped and trying too hard. But then i read the first book in the Demonata series, Lord Loss and gained a new opinion of Shan. Lord Loss was packed full of action, horror, a frantic pace and some great characters and mythology and so it inspired me to give Shan another shot. I wasn't going back to Cirque Du Freak and probably never will, so i decided to give this new saga a go. And i'm glad i did. Larten Crepsley is a character from Cirque Du Freak, and this new series charts how he becomes who he is in the Saga of Darren Shan (don't worry, no spoilers will follow). As with Lord Loss, Shan conjured a palpable atmosphere of dread and the book benefited massively from it, making it very easy to become lost in the world on the pages. Shan's trademark horror is evident in every single chapter and he creates some genuinely scary moments. There is also some great tension and plenty of twists and turns in a plot that races along at a fair speed. This first book is never action packed and it's - like most of Shan's books - way too short. The plot just gets going and seems to end far too quickly. But the characters are developed well enough and the threads laid for the rest of the story arc are intriguing. I'll definitely be picking up the sequels. I don't think it's necessary to have read The Saga of Darren Shan to enjoy this book. Highly recommended. Obra maestra. Me encanto. Hasta me casaria con este libro.

Začátek skvělý, konec už jen velmi pozvolný, bohužel...
