About book Bhima Lone Warrior (1984)

I have the English translation of this great book, which is called "Bhima: Lone Warrior".About the book (the English version): It's an excellent piece of research and fictionalization by Mr. Vasudevan, greatly translated by Ms. Krishnakutti. Many thanks to both of them for this magnificent book.I became more excited to read this book when I came to know that the author has used the finest resources (eg. K. M. Ganguli's Mahabharata) to write it.Reading the mighty Bhima narrating the story was a wonderful experience. I remember that I was imagining the picture of characters as well as every new incident as I gone through it.If you are thinking the story is mythology based; FYI, it's not. You'd see a very little mention of mythology in the book. If you are a Mahabharata enthusiast, this is a must read. A different take on events of the Mahabharata from the perspective of Bhima who is often portrayed as a brute warrior of lower intelligence unable to grasp subtleties and nuances expected of his royal (political) lineage. While a general sense of Bhima's relatively simplistic world view is conveyed, I felt that further explication of Bhima's rationale for his actions and attitudes would have made the work considerably more interesting. I'm not sure if this is a shortcoming in the original work itself or a result of the translation.Couple of other points: The reader is expected to be fairly familiar with the Mahabharata - if you're not, I'd suggest reading it before taking up this book. Also, the transition between the various significant series of events is simply non-existent and makes for a rather jarring experience to suddenly jump from one period of Bhima's life to the next.

Another perspective to Mahabharatha and this time from Bhima's view. Having heard so much about the Malayalam original Randamoozham, I was curious to read a translation. And the translation takes you one step closer to Bhima and shows his mortal side which most other interpretations don't. This book also looks at the war and the epic on the whole from a neutral perspective. Mahabharatha fans should read this one.
