I can’t quite put my finger on why this series is not working for me - it has everything I tend to go for in fantasy (independently-minded heroine with a sense of humour, conflicted love interest, colourful cast of supporting characters) but I’m just not invested enough in the outcome. Maybe everything comes a tad too easily to Raine, maybe there’s too much repetition and not enough growth - whatever it is, I’m not quite connecting with these books. But back to this book itself, for a moment, I actually thought it would be curtains for Tam - I was holding my breath for a moment so big tick for the suspense side of things. I’ve always been on Team Mychael so yay for the love triangle *finally* being resolved, but in a way, I felt cheated. The fact that Mychael is not the perfect paladin that Raine thought him to be (and therefore creating inherent conflicts in their relationship) was part of what made the romance interesting. Having a major change to Mychael’s background this late in the series made it feel like a bit of a magic trick to make him and Raine more suited. Having said that, at least the love triangle is now no more... and I still want to know how this series finishes. I've been trying to pin what it is that I'm not happy with on this series and I think I know. The action is good and some of the characters are great, but there is very little passion. I don't normally read a lot of paranormal romance; that's not my thing. But if there's going to be a romantic attraction, then there needs to be more sexual tension. That's what disturbs me about the series I think. The relationship between Mychael and Raine has no tension to it; they just don't have time to consumate. The one with Tam had some tension right through when he shoved her against the mast in an early book and laid a big one on her. After that, not so much. So good action but the relationships to me are...meh.
