To make this brief and to the point, this book word-punched me in the solar plexus multiple times through out the almost 100 pages. Sometimes it just a single succinct sentence, not even a paragraph. Perhaps it was because the story began when Mackey was in his mid-teen. Everything was stark under the rough living condition and teenage angsts. Ms. Lane was able to translate those into words, in her style of writing that made everything just... Like a punch in the chest.It certainly was a great start of the serial, like being shot out of a cannon. I am glad I wait until all seven parts were release before starting to read. Otherwise I am not sure how to deal with wait with this book's ending. Story (after bonus scene) ends at 90%.I can already tell this is going to rip me apart at some point because I'm already in love with Mackey, and he's going to fall apart before he gets put back together, and then he's going to be ripped apart again before the glue has set.There's a long journey to go, and lots left to be introduced. I'm curious to see how this is going to get me to the end. (And dammit, I want the end to be better than the end of the Hunger Games series. That seriously left me wanting.) I must trust in Amy Lane.... (*angst and pain first, though, dammit*)The extra (for those who purchased the extra bits at release) tells us why the boys do their best to keep Stevie (and Jefferson) away from Stevie's father.
