I thought that this book might be a prequel, but it is not. It picks up only a couple of days before Lauren showed up at Cal's family farm.This book is all in Chris' POV which I love. We get more of an insight on how he is coping with DID and it fills in the missing two years of Cal's disappearance.It is not a long novella, but it is very important to the series. Told from first person point of view (Chris) the story runs parallel to some of the events and the earth shattering reveal in book one-If I Break. Chris Scott has suffered with black outs for years. He loses days, weeks and even months where he remembers nothing about what has happened or with whom he has been. BEFORE I BREAK looks at the emotional and heartbreaking fall out when the truth about Chris’s rare neurological disorder is finally revealed. Chris’s family has hidden the truth from him and it is with this realization that Chris is no longer the person he believes himself to be. There are people who know more about his life than he could have ever imagined.BEFORE I BREAK is a quick read that takes a look at one man’s disjointed life and the after affects of the life numbing black outs that have controlled his life. The secondary characters reveal a little more information about the history behind Chris’s condition but their real purpose pits Chris against the past, the present and his possible future. There is a bit of a foreshadow cliffhanger that makes for another interesting upcoming scenario.The execution of the storyline is a little jumpy and I do wish there was some more information revealed about Chris’s medical history. Hopefully the next storyline will delve deeper into Chris’s past and the deciding factor as to why everyone kept secret the most important information of his life. There are some people who would have preferred the information had never been revealed while others hope to see a 'different' side to Chris' s personality -return.Copy supplied by the author.
