About book Be Excellent At Anything: The Four Keys To Transforming The Way We Work And Live (2011)

I thought that this was a good summary of the different aspects of yourself that you need to balance to maintain a sense of well-being: rest, exercise, nutrition, meaning, challenge, emotional safety, etc. I was completely pulled in to the argument of living a balanced life in order to be more productive. "I want to take a walk right now and the exercise will help me get more done after than I would've without it." However, I read an article in NYT that discussed how bizarre it is that Americans only value a balanced life because it could offer a monetary benefit, i.e. more success in the workplace. After that, I started to think that I can maintain boundaries and balance in my life just because it makes me happier even if I don't get any more stuff done. Even if I get less stuff done. *gasp!*"I'm taking a walk because I need a break and I like nature." 1. Take a break at least every 90 minutes, so that your brain can go into deep concentration during those 90 minutes.2. Not sleeping enough depletes willpower which makes you more likely to eat unhealthily, procrastinate, etc.3. If you wake up after sleeping less than 7 hours, lie quietly. You might fall asleep again.4. An afternoon nap of 90 min between 1 to 3pm leads to twice the amount of learning.5. Feeling respected is the most important aspect to our emotional stability. Feeling personally criticized takes the greatest toll on our health.6. We can do our best work when we feel connected, not one-up or one-down.7. Multitasking leads to worse performance.
