Collecting the volumes Robin: Year One and Batgirl: Year One, this book is a must read for Batman fans. It shows us the early adventures of Batman's first sidekicks, in their tumultuous first year as young crimefighters.Robin Year One is a very nuanced and character driven story, told from the perspective of Alfred. It really explores the dynamic relationship between Batman and Robin, the son/father angle, the partner angle, and the way he soften's Batman's grim edge.The second half of the book is more interesting to me, because I am such a Batgirl fan. It shows us Barbara Gordon's attempt at becoming a cop or FBI agent, and getting stonewalled because she is short or a female.At a masquerade party, she dons a modified Halloween costume in order to defy her father, but ends up fighting third tier villain Killer Moth.What ensues is an adventurous story of Barbara coming to terms with her goals as to being a crimefighter, with a little help from Batman and Robin.Since Robin and Batgirl: Year One are out of print and considered rare, this re-print allows those to read these fantastic first time stories. They are definitely must read, with incredible art and covers. This is my first time reading the first adventures of both Batgirl and Robin. I've always known Dick Grayson as Nightwing, his Robin days were before my comic reading time. It was really great to go back and see him as a rookie. He's always made a great counterpoint go Batman. He's happy and enjoys what he does, where the Dark Knight is all dark and broody.Batgirl Year One is also included, which makes this book a great deal. The Batgirl story is just as good, but I have to make a note about the covers. The covers to Batgirl Year One are drawn by Marcos Martin, and are some of the best I've seen. I'd love to get some of those framed on my wall.
