About book Bande De Canailles (2008)

Book Title: Doggone Dogs by Karen BeaumontShort Description of book: This cute tale is a book about dogs and their adventures through a variety of rhyming words and counting up and back down. There are wonderful illustrations from one of my favorite illustrators (David Catrow). Teach: I have a couple of ideas in my mind for this book but will share focusing on word choice using this read aloud (I would also use this for focusing on details with illustrations and creating a class book using numbers). For this lesson, I will start by reminding students that sometimes authors write to entertain and one reason we know that is through the use of “playing with rhyming words.” Introduce the book and tell students to pay close attention to the author’s use of rhyming words. Tell students that they can snap when they hear rhyming words. Read the story (stopping at a couple of points to stress the use of rhymes in the book). Tell students to listen in to the rest of the story. For this lesson, I would have their daybooks (or writing journals) with them on the carpet. Once the book is finished, I would have students stop and jot some of the rhyming words that they heard in this story. Give a couple of minutes. (From other word study lessons that we are doing, students will have a list of rhyming words in their reader’s journal that they can refer back to during this writing time). Discuss that we will write a story together about (cats, or another favorite animal) with their adventures. Brainstorm rhyming words and create your class story. (This could be stretched out over several days or a week by using other rhyming books like Silly Sally, Dr. Suess, etc.). By the end of this study, I would want the students to try to create a short story using a character with the use of rhyming words.Expected Outcomes: Gradually, I want the students to play with rhyming words and experiment with language to create a narrative piece about a character and their adventures. CCSS W1. 3 and 1.5: Students will write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, an provides some sense of closure. W1.5: With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed. If you've read my other children's book reviews, you know I am a sucker for a) dogs b) repetition, rhyme, and c) any book the talks about "poop". This book has all three, plus wonderful illustrations. The dogs in this book are so ugly they are cute. My kids love this book and I actually don't cringe when I see them coming with this particular choice. It is a wild adventure from page one all the way to the end while the owner of ten dogs chase them through the park and back home again. If you are looking for a book for ages 2-early elementary, this would be an excellent addition to any library. Wonderful for read-aloud.
