Nasty and dirty. that's the best words I can think to describe this book. I can't lie and say I didn't know the subject matter in advance, but it's definitely the most explicit writing I've ever read. and just kinda...ick. I also won't lie--the scenes themselves were pretty hot (except for one I can think of that kinda grossed me out). but the overarching story was just kinda creepy. oh, hello, cute babysitter that we've known since you were 15. you look hot and you're legal finally. would you like to have lots of dirty sex with a couple that is significantly older than you and has been authority figures in your life? sure. no problem.....I just hated how "Doc" would look at Ronnie during some of these scenes, and say "are you OK?"--it didn't seem sweet or concerned to me. it reminded me of manipulators I've known before, people who want you to say it's OK so they can still get their rocks off, but don't want to seem like jerks, so they ask if you're OK, with the implication that you must say yes...so maybe it's personal issues, but I just found this creepy. a bit too in the vein of Lolita for my taste. the scenes with Ronnie and Gretchen were the least objectionable to me, since they were between peers, not between adults and teens. Also, there were young kids around while much of this was happening! Especially some of the scenes on the beach, out in the open. it's awfully handy how agreeable those kids were about going to bed and staying there, not looking where they weren't supposed to, etc. just one misplaced glance, and the family would have deserved to be reported to Child and Protective Services. If I want something else extremely explicit and steamy to read, I'd probably look up the author's other work and hope it was equally hot, but with lots of consenting adults...not barely legal ones, with young kids asleep in the same house. ick. So, I ended up reading this book because of all the hubbub about the Baumgartners series and so I finally thought, what the hell? It was an okay book, just not my thing. I can't pinpoint exactly why, I just couldn't get into it. I'm pretty neutral about it. I didn't particularly like it and I didn't dislike it either. It was an okay read just to get a taste of the Baumgartners world to see if I'd want to get the others. While I probably won't be reading the others, I would recommend reading at least one of the 6 books in this series because the Baumgartners are an unusual and interesting family. And who knows? They might just be your kind of family.
