Let's all admit it we have a little bit of Marv Pushkin in us. Sure, we may not be blatantly an asshole but we all have those thoughts and tendencies. Poor Marv is trapped under his Range Rover getting eaten by a bear, and that's pretty much the entire story in a nutshell; of course there is so much more. With his wild dreams, delusions and conversations with himself, Mav's dilemma will have you laughing out loud throughout. There were parts that made me feel squeamish, but the comedy aspect is worth it. I would suggest this read to anyone with a sense of humor and a strong stomach for gore. Going by my personal rating system, I am forced to give this book 3 stars (one for character likeability, one for humor, and one for originality), BUT if I didn't have this particular rating systerm, I would give it only one star. While it is true, Help! A Bear Is Eating Me! has a great deal of humor, it's the wrong kind of humor for me. It's not silly or clever, it's self deprecating humor and in some places, rather gruesome humor. I want to take a star away for that, but my rating system doesn't allow for that.Okay, Marvin Pushkin is likeable and at first, seems like a nice guy. But, then we learn he's only a nice guy when he's drunk, stoned, or hyped up on so many drugs that his niceness really is the overall facade. When he's sober or not drugged up, he wants to kill his wife. I want to take a star away for that too. The book is definitely original. I can't argue that. And I hope I never read another book like it again.
