As I read other people's reviews. They often point out the main character is an asshat of the highest order, yet, they could sympathize with him. I found him hard to identify with. He was a jerk, and ignoramus, philandering, arrogant, prick. However, I loved the end! It was an unexpected twist. He was still all those things, but from a different perspective. It made me feel kinda happy, and warm inside! Another thing, this character was kind of like a train wreck, unpleasant to behold but somewhat riveting. I actually had to read this book twice before I felt comfortable reviewing it. I think it had to do with the fact that I really wanted to hate it after the first two chapters my first time through, that I tried too hard to hate it and therefore skewed my initial reading. So, I put it down and decided to wait a while before trying it again and when I picked it up this second time, I tried not to have an opinion at all going into it. That said this book is freaking fantastic! I love how the only redeemable character in the whole book seems to be Mr. Bear, the bear who is eating the protagonist. What I loved about this book is the commitment. I know that may not be a usual comment, but as a writer myself I know that when you set out to write a book from the point of view of an complete and utter asshole the challenge it is sticking with it, consistently through the entire book. This commitment to character made the book that would have been a good book and excellent book. I also felt the dream sequences were handled superbly and were a seamless part of the rest of the narrative which is also not the easiest thing to accomplish. Mykle Hansen really out did himself with this one. I will admit that it takes an uncommon amount of skill to write a horrible book about horrible people and horrible actions and make it an enjoyable read, which this book is. I think everyone should read this book, if not for the underlying social commentary, which is worth it in and of itself, the read it for the obscene humor and well executed writing.
