It's hard not to find yourself falling in love with the protagonist, Willow. She inspires a strange hope in the reader, despite a back drop of tragedy. I purchased this novel because I found the cover irresistible. To my delight, the story was equally enchanting. Perhaps Goldberg's greatest triumph is the character Dell. His incompetence is infuriating. Yet, it is hard not to feel compassion for him. This speaks to Sloan's ability to develop complex characters. While the plot was achingly predictable, the characters were interesting and compelling. Their fierce love and protection made me feel like loving the people in my life with greater tenacity. I loved Willow's insight into the world in which she existed. Her youthful inexperience coupled with her brilliant mind provided the reader unique perspectives into what could otherwise be seen as mundane. This story was not earth-shattering or epic in any shape. But it's simplicity and heart are deserving of an audience. I leave the story wanting to do a little bit more with my life. It has me pausing to reflect on how I treat those around me. I find myself hoping that when I face pain, I can find a way to grow something new and beautiful from my misery. I loved this book SOOO much and to think I picked it on accident.. The things I liked the most about "Counting 7's" was that it was very surprising!! Willow was orphaned as a baby and then orphaned again when she was eleven.. Who would've expected that? She's also a very powerful character who overcomes many obstacles that most people couldn't dream of! She started off antisocial and awkward but blossomed into a social butterfly and actually had a family to love again. Even though she stopped counting sevens she has moved on!
Great book. Quick read. Wonderfully developed characters. Along the lines of The book Wonder.
