About book Amelia Bedelia Means Business (2013)

The Story-I'm taking a look at book 1 in the new series- Amelia Bedelia Means Business. The author is Herman Parish, the nephew of the original Amelia Bedelia creator, Peggy Parish. The story revolves around Amelia's quest to earn money for a shiny new bike. She tries all sorts of things, from waitressing to having a lemonade stand to earn the money, often with disastrous results. My Thoughts-In my opinion, this new spin off series is decent for kids that aren't familiar with the original picture books. There is a lot of story added to make it a chapter book, with the occasional word mishaps. The reading is easy and the story line is funny. While the original books focused mainly on Amelia and her mishaps, the chapters books bring in several side characters including her parents, fellow students and town folk. I believe kids in 2nd grade and up will enjoy Amelia's zany antics. But, I do have to say that the original Amelia Bedelia books have a magic that these don't quite get. Very cute story with Amelia Bedelia as a child. The original books featured an older Amelia Bedelia, but in this series of chapter books, she is just a grade-school aged child. One never knows what will happen with Amelia Bedelia because she takes things literally...really! And this leads to much humor and many misunderstandings and fun for all. In this book, Amelia Bedelia needs money...lots of it...because she has to pay for half of a new bike. Her old one is embarrassing to ride and the new girl Suzanne has THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BIKE IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Follow along as Amelia Bedelia gets her first job and loses it, starts her own first business, and participates in the annual bike parade. Will she end up with the new bike she desires or will she be stuck riding her old, beat-up bike forever?Entertaining story for ages six to eight, but many moms (like me) might enjoy a quick, light read like this one.
