After reading the first book in this series, I was very intrigued to know the rest of Lillian Arrington's story. While reading this book, I was entranced and saddened at how such a beautiful person (inside and out) could make such a mess of her life. It truly was heart wrenching to read this book. I kept wanting so badly for her life to work out the way it should and was thrilled when she finally ended up back on Jasper Island. But just when you think the heartache is all over for her, the author throws in a few more twists and turns. I am now reading the 3rd book in this series - which is a prequel to the first two. I'm looking forward to finding out all of the Arrington family secrets and hoping it will make the first two books make even more sense. At first I didn't like this book because Lillian kept making what seemed to be the same mistakes and I thought, "Wise up!" But then I realized how young she was and what kind of life she came from. She never had a chance to make little mistakes. She was thrown into a world that she had no way of knowing how to cope with. That she survived at all, in spite of this, creates an amazing, heart wrenching story that, if many of us were honest, could reflect our own life journey. Roxane writes a story without the naiveté I might expect from someone so young. I'm there. I'm 61 and I can look back at a life of mistakes and walls that I have run into and imagine that if someone read my story, they might yell the same thing, "Wise up!" Although Lillian's life is far more dramatic and challenging than mine ever was, the impact of individuals in her life is the stuff of life's learning experiences. Bravo Roxane for capturing the tough, defining moments of lives and creating such a compelling story.
