About book All-New X-Men, Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men (2013)

The past is back with a vengeance in Brian Bendis and Stuart Immonen's new X-Men series. The Beast is dying, falling victim to another mutation that will eventually kill him. In a drastic step, he traverses back to the time of the original X-Men, bringing them back to the future to help right the wrongs that have beset the team. Things go awry when the kids bolt to face Cyclops and his mutant freedom fighters head-on - and meet their possible destinies. The trade juggles quite a lot in its first few issues: Cyclops and his fugitive X-Men gathering new recruits, Beast and the scholastic X-Men attempting to keep the peace, and the young X-Men realizing what the future may hold in store. The pencils from Immonen are gorgeous, as per usual, helping visually craft this multi-layered tale. While it is a treat to see kids back in play, one wonders which version of X-Men will eventually reign supreme as the premiere team. Enjoy the retro vibe while it lasts with Yesterday's X-Men! This one was a real surprise. I didn't think I wanted (yet another) alternate universe team of X-Men, and it seemed like a transparent device to bring Jean Grey back from the dead. Again.HEY MARVEL! HERE'S THE SOLUTION TO YOUR "HOW TO BRING BACK JEAN GREY" PROBLEM: STOP *#%$#%^ KILLING HER!!!!Yeah, I went full caps lock on that muther.Anyway, this is a fresh, fun take on all the characters, and I'm happy (and surprised) that the rest of the team haven't been killed off or sent back to their past.I actually love young Cyclops, Angel, and Iceman. Oddly, the least successful characterization is Jean, herself. She's interesting, but strangely far from any version of her we have seen before.Recommended.
