Alex is eager to head off on a new adventure with old friends and new. This time, the quest is for a ring which can help the dwarves find new mines---something essential to securing their future livelihood, and something that would take far too long without a tool like the ring to assist. But as Alex gets deeper into the quest, signs of a bigger conspiracy lurk, and it may no longer be enough to simply complete the adventure as planned . . .Once again, this story surpasses its prequels. Although much of the straightforward characterization remains, Alex---as well as Kat---find much struggle within themselves as choice, circumstance, and destiny intertwine. Alex has a much more interesting arsenal of spells this time around, and he puts them to good use. Paradoxically, this actually works against him in places. In one of his first battles, he hesitates and is nearly killed simply because he can't decide if he ought to go for a spell or his sword, which is a novice mistake he hasn't made in either of the previous two novels (and that's good, because Alex is supposed to be a novice, despite his previous encounters). The battle with the necromancer, as well, was not only longer and flashier than any other fight, it had Alex fighting himself as much as his enemy.I liked the elements of a deeper plot beginning to creep in. There were brief moments in the previous novels with the shadow creature Alex faced, but that was only one enemy and now we're getting threads of something that may cover the known lands. I also vastly enjoyed Salinor. He's one of the most complex characters Alex has met, and frequently amusing.Given how the story is developing, I would recommend reading the whole series before starting here, though it should stand well enough alone. I rate this book Recommended. This is the third in this series and I am enjoying them greatly...even though it is blatantly about a young man who's stumbled into being the overall, great beyond words, probably prophesied and always awesome wizard of most "young gamers'" dreams.yep he does it all and he does it not only well but with style!These books feel very much like participating in a table top RPG (ala D&D) and they're fun. This one is not really any less so but i think I may have overdosed on them a bit, LOL.Still the "Adventure" to find Albrek's Tomb roles on through several encounters (after all first they have to find the tomb) and far away places. Our young hero is again instrumental in grand events and finds out even more about his powers and talents...though his background is still very much a mystery. Enjoy.
