About book Action Comics, Vol. 1: Superman And The Men Of Steel (2012)
Morrison's All-Star Superman isn't just one the best Superman comics but one of the best superhero comics of all time so I came to this with some excitement and high expectations. Unfortunately it's a huge disappointment. It has some nice ideas and some clever touches but it's mostly messily drawn and feels like a weaker version of Morrison's other works. Some of the backup stories are fun but it's a wasted opportunity for a young Superman story with a clean slate. Superman Action Comics: Volume 1: Superman and the Men of Steel, Grant Morrison and Rags Morales recreate Superman, and more importantly, Clark Kent. We meet Superman first, terrorizing Glenmorgan, a corrupt businessman. Behind the scenes, Lex Luthor and General Lane (that’s right, Lois’s dad) are working together to capture Superman.Quickly, the stakes are raised with the introduction of other alien life forms, and Superman has to make some decisions as to where his loyalties lie.The second half of the volume is a bit confusing, bringing in allies and enemies of Superman without enough back story. Usually, I am the one to complain about too much exposition, especially in the first volumes of The New 52! However, I without a bit more assistance, I was not so sure what was going on, and I certainly did not quite catch on to what all the time traveling was about. I did, however, appreciate the supporting shorts in the back of the volume. Since they were addendums, and not impeding the progress of the plot, they were more enjoyable.I was very interested in the recreation of Clark Kent. The illustrations and dialogue make him a more convincing nerd. In his commentary in the back of the volume, Morrison notes that Clark Kent is an act for Superman. However, as the story progresses, it becomes more difficult to determine which is the act: Superman or Clark Kent? And who, exactly, is the actor?Promising. I am glad to note that most of the New 52! volumes offer promise, which is a lot to offer in a renewed title.
