Again, Lalla Bains takes on her own investigation and misfortunes as she can't leave crime solving to the experts! She's now engaged to Sheriff Caleb Stone and this will be her last summer of flying for her dad's Bains Aero Ag Service which has been sold. But she needs one new pilot to complete the scheduled flights. Dewey Treat is referred to her by a close friend of her dad. Dewey is a fine pilot but the other regular pilot, Mad Dog Scwartz, is having suspicions (or jealousy issues) about Dewey. Add to these pressures which always seem to assault Lalla, Aunt Mae and cousin Pearlie have arrived for the up-coming wedding and try to become the wedding planners for Lalla and Caleb. Oh, and also add in the end-of-business BBQ party to be held at the ranch. At least things go well at the BBQ until Mad Dog and his friend confront Dewey who becomes very nervous. He and his wife, Nancy, very soon start to leave the party, but suddenly Dewey collapses in front of Nancy and dies instantly. Nancy believes her husband has been murdered, but we won't know until the autopsy results are released. Lalla goes a bit far in her private investigations that it may result in losing her fiance. This novel is fast paced, exciting, one I could not put down. Murder, chaos, humor, what else does a reader yearn for! Lalla Baines just can't keep her nose out of police business. When Dewey Treat is murdered at her father's ranch and someone tries to kidnap his wife Nancy. Lalla can't stop herself, she must get involved against the wishes of her boyfriend Caleb. Lalla and her cousin Pearlie, is on the trail of a cold blooded killer. Everyone he bribed to find his target is turning up murdered and Lalla is left to die of dehydration or blown to bits by a bomb under the welcome mat. Caleb at his wits end trying to keep her safe, while hunting down a killer. It's got enough quirky characters to keep you amused and turning the pages to learn who the killer is.
