Das Buch startet zügug und der Inhalt ist wirklich sehr interessant und lehrreich (Vorrausgesetzt, der Leser kann etwas mit den erwähnten Persönlichkeiten anfangen). Es dreht sich sehr viel um die Kunst bzw. die Künstler von 1913, was mir persönlich sehr gut gefallen hat, allerdings ein Hindernis für Leseinteressierte darstellt, die sich eher der Politik der Epoche zugetan sind und nicht allzu sehr in Kunst/Literatur schwelgen. Leider fällt der "Spannungsbogen" (im Prinzip gibt es keine richtige Handlung, da eigentlich nur aneinander gereihte Ereignisse aufgezählt werden) im hinteren Drittel des Buches etwas ab und die Erzählung wird etwas langatmig (deshalb ein Stern Abzug). 1913 ist jedoch trotzdem ein informatives und mit Ironie und Witz geschriebenes Werk, welches kurze Auschnitte aus den Leben späterer Legenden aus Kunst und Kultur sowie Ausblicke auf deren späteres Schaffen gibt. Auf jeden Fall weiterzuempfehlen! “1913: The Year Before the Storm” consists of small anecdotes about the year 1913 presented in chronological order from January to December, none exceeding two or three pages at most. It’s not a detailed study of the year and its influence on modernity. It’s more of a “sampler” that introduces you to many of the seminal people and works of art from 1913 -- Kafka, Freud, Stalin, Einstein, Duchamp, etc. The storytelling is strong at points (e.g., the story of the return of the Mona Lisa), but I found “1913” was primarily useful in introducing me to things I could look up later. I thought I already knew a lot about this era, but I realized I didn’t as I started keeping track of all of the works and people mentioned that I didn’t know. By the end, I was tempted to immerse myself in works from 1913 for a few months. I don’t know how enjoyable “1913” would be to someone without any knowledge of the early twentieth century. I imagine it would be bewildering, but then again it could be fun to read these anecdotes without any preconceptions.
