About book Yummy: The Last Days Of A Southside Shorty (2010)

I thought 'Yummy' was a pretty interesting book. It is a true story that takes place in inner city Chicago and it is mostly about the death of Robert 'Yummy' Sandifer and his classmate Roger who was trying to figure out why he would be involved in the gang lifestyle. He gets the name 'Yummy' due to his love of sweets and many people thought he had a personality to match until he shot and killed a 14 year old girl, mostly everyone gave up on him. That forced him to go on the run for a long time before his 'brothers' in his gang decided to kill him. I liked how realistic it was with it's text-to-world like style. It depicted the gangs and crime very realistically. It does make you realize how hard times like this are in those cities and among those gangs. It is sad that people at a young age such as Yummy can just start their youth as a criminal and continue it as they age. I found this book very entertaining. It makes you think about how Yummy felt and how you almost pity him at times. The artwork really fit the theme of the comic it was really well done. I do recommend it, it is a solid 3/5. This is one of those books that will haunt me for a second. It's one of those books that makes my heart feel and my mind think "I wish this book didn't have to be written." While I obviously have read other tragic stories fiction and nonfiction alike, I think that G.Neri did a great job telling the story and making me feel this way, along with Berks vivid illustrations. This is definitely a must read for a lot of the kids I teach.
