About book Young Avengers, Vol. 3: Mic-Drop At The Edge Of Time And Space (2014)
Starts super strong, fumbles it in the second volume, a little, and then... fizzle. This one fell so flat for me. Also, what's with the bizarre final issue??? The "nobody is straight" reveal comes out of nowhere, diminishes the notability of the Teddy/Billy relationship, and feels so forced and weird and pointless that one of the characters has to hang a lantern on it. What a waste of pages.I felt like this was more a showcase for the characters than a real story, and the plot resolution felt forced and contrived and super weak. Is it just me, or was every single problem in this entire volume solved by one character or another embracing themselves in some way? Billy embraces his power, Loki embraces his vulnerability by confessing a big lie, Teddy embraces his emotions... on and on. Stop beating me over the head with it and give me a real plot instead of a hug! I'll resist giving this 5/5, because the main villain(s), plot and plot twists honestly aren't that intriguing (or logical and understandable; Billy's powers still confuse me, to be honest, as did Loki's), but everything else is perfect. The characters are just so precious, funny and heartwarming in every way. I love the art, the dialogue, the diversity of the characters, the romantic LGBTQ+ elements, the teenage angst, the social media savviness. It's very relatable, but it's still wonderful, light, entertaining escapism -- just like it's supposed to be.(Spoiler) And wow, I missed Tommy so much! I really hope he sticks around for the next run.
