Four stars because it's a great glimpse into the stories on a military base. I've known people who have had similar experiences to nearly every one of the couples profiled in these short stories and that really surprised me. I thought the Author's Note was really touching and well written. A special breed, these deployment-hardened spouses/families, and you can never appreciate it fully until you've walked in their shoes. These are important stories. They show the impact of war on individuals, couples, and families from the perspective of male soldiers and their wives. Sometimes the stories are told from the woman's point of view and sometimes from the man's. Sometimes we are taken to war zone in the Middle East and sometimes we see the war zone at home. We learn about base housing issues; we learn about loneliness; we learn how hard the transitions are. The characters in these stories are young - early to late-twenties. It is hard to imagine how young families are able to deal with the separation and the re-unification, especially for year-long deployments.
