About book Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Story Of Pop Music From Bill Haley To Beyonce (2014)
What a great book, non fiction or otherwise. The author is clearly a fan of music and an academic who understands how to speak to non-academics. Pop music is not something that I gravitate towards. The chapter breakdowns as sub-genres of pop was a great idea. It helps make the topic flow and it helps the author keeps you interested, especially if the top area isn't one you love, because it will be concise and well written, so you go with the flow of the words. I can't say enough about the ability to enjoy this book. The honesty and the clear dissection, separating it from a "rock and roll" book or book about a specific band or movement was key. At the same time it is not a reference book. It doesn't gloss over bands, instead it integrates bands into common paragraphs and it sorts acts by their overall importance and relevance to a year or era. I very entertaining walk through the history of pop music which will have you thinking about your likes and dislikes, while singing many of the songs in your head. As it spans 50 years, the survey is quite broad without getting too deep. The book is best read in small pieces, a few chapters (which are short anyway) at a time.It was fun to read about so many artists I barely think about any more, especially those from my college days in the early 80s.The different between 4 and 5 stars for me was the decidedly UK bent of the book. This is not surprising considering the author is British, but it left me with groups I hadn't heard of, groups who were big here but not there, or who had very different levels of success between the US and UK. Definitely a book to be recommended to the music lover in your life.
