About book Życie W Słoiku. Ocalenie Ireny Sendler (2013)

I can only say this book must be read, by young adults in high schools all over America. So much is portrayed in this story, a semesters worth of history and a lifetime of compassion, bravery and unbelievable wills to survive, if only to help others survive at any cost.A small group of high school students who pulled a name from a book and discovered the power of humanity and how the bravery of a few saved the lives of many during the Holocaust. Life in a Jar is by Jack Mayer. It is the true story of a rescuer and what she did during the Holocaust and how she became well known. In 1999, Mr. C, a teacher in Uniontown, KS, hands a file of information to Liz Cambers as a possible National History Day project. Little did he or Liz know; but they were stepping into a project that would change not only their lives but lives of people across the world. The file Liz looked at was on Irena Sendler. Irena was a Holocaust rescuer in the Warsaw Ghetto who worked with Zegota. She smuggled babies and children out of the ghetto and placed them in safe houses. Then she made sure they had the money they needed for food, etc. When necessary, she would find new hiding places for them. Unlike others, she kept track of the names of the children, both their Jewish name and Polish names so she could reunite them with their families after the war was over. She hid the lists of names in jars beneath the apple tree out back. She is credited with saving 2500 children. After the war she tried to reunite the children with their families but was unable to do so and turned the lists over to a different organization so they could try. Liz Cambers along with Megan Stewart and Sabrina Coons researched the story of Irena and created a play based on her life. Their project took them all the way to the national level. One thing they couldn’t find was when and where she died. This was because she was alive. The girls and their parents and teacher were able to go to Poland and meet Irena several times before her death. Irena was very pleased with their play; but she refused to watch it. It was too close to reality for her. The book tells the story of how the play came to be as well as tells of Irena’s life in the ghetto. The play is still put on many times a year with some of the original characters. The play changed their lives and continues to change the lives of others as it continues to be performed. The play and the book show how one person can change the lives of others. It is an excellent book and an excellent project.
