Dritto nella mente e nel cuore.La scrittura di Everett ha la musica di un torrente di acqua limpida che scorre fra i sassi levigati dalla corrente. E come staresti seduta accanto a questa acqua per un tempo infinito, così vorresti continuare a leggere e leggere quanto quest’uomo scrive. Perché il protagonista di questa storia io lo vorrei come amico, come vicino di casa, lo vorrei vicino e basta, anzi ne vorrei tanti di uomini così vicini a me.E’ uomo che sa che ogni uomo ha una ferita, che é quella di essere un essere umano, con tutto quello che ciò significa e comporta, dalle vette agli abissi. E’ uno che sa che bisogna prendersene cura di questa ferita altrimenti si infetta a fa ammalare, e poi succede che un uomo, proprio come tutti, bruci con la benzina la tana di un coyote e il coyote é femmina e per difendere i cuccioli si immola cercando di portare via il fuoco con sé, lontano dai suoi piccoli. E altri uomini, proprio uguali a noi, uccidono un omosessuale e ritengono che uomini come loro, ma di un altro colore, non hanno diritto di esistere.Intolleranza, razzismo, violenza, abitano l’America, abitano il mondo, abitano gli uomini. Siamo tutti feriti, e tutti in grado di infliggere ferite, l’unica cosa che possiamo cambiare é l’averne consapevolezza e sapere agire di conseguenza.Splendido, splendente, luce pura, come un diamante.
I am really not sure what to think of this book.It's about a rancher who trains horses, his small town, and the way he and other townsfolk react to homosexual outsiders. (But he's black, see, so he's had his own bigotry to face)It's an unusual book -- I guess it's a modern Western? On the one hand, it felt like a Louis L'Amour at times. On the other, I had a hard time believing any small town (or anyone in it) holding a gay/lesbian rally, no matter what the incident (I lived in towns of 50, 200, and 2000 and I cannot picture any of them doing this).I felt like the big incident that happens at the outset of the book gets brushed aside. I mean, apparently it isn't THE big incident the author wanted to tell, but still. It left me with questions.
Do You like book Wounded (2005)?
I really liked this book and would have given it 5 stars, except the ending seemed very rushed. And, although I know it's a more typical of a modern novel, I hate an unresolved ending. The story focuses on a horse trainer in a small Western town. He happens to be Black and there happens to be a hate crime against a gay man in his town. The author explores racial prejudice and homophobia against the backdrop of the American West. The narrator is well written and I really liked his sense of humor. Will look for more from this author.

I really liked "Erasure" and I was excited to pick up this, another of Percival Everett's. Ostensibly this is the story of a Black rancher getting and his reaction to an LGBT hate crime in his small Wyoming town.But really it's a story about someone who doesn't really understand his own feelings or how to relate to other people. This conflict motivates all of the characters in the novel and I think we're meant to understand that this same tension motivates all humans.I am not very familiar with Western novels but I guess that"Wounded" somehow fits into the genre. Which explains that abrupt and sad ending.I liked this book. It wasn't at the level of "Erasure," but good nonetheless. I don't mean this is a criticism but it also reminded me of some YA in that a lot of relationship-building and character building was really accelerated.
