About book Worthy Brown's Daughter CD (2014)

I was very surprised by this book. Having read other Margolin books, I anticipated a story with a modern setting, some dark crime, and the thriller sense of writing for which Margolin is so well known. I was pleasantly surprised, however; this book is actually set in the 1860s. It is a story of murder; but not so much a mystery as it is a story of trial, deception, ethics, slavery, sexual abuse, grief and corruption. It is a story of 19th century politeness and prejudice, gun-slinging and rich barons monopolizing life in the new frontiers of Oregon. It is a story of working women and civilized women competing for men who are both corrupt and honorable. I am not normally into Westerns, but I still enjoyed this work. Again - pleasantly surprised. Now, I won't know what to expect when I pick the next Margolin book. :) I’ve read several Phillip Margolin novels and they’re very similar. No, not the storyline or plot, but his overall novels. I’m not saying that to be a bad thing. That’s just Margolin. His books do what a book is supposed to do: passes time. I’ve never finished a Margolin novel and said, “Wow, that was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.” I’ve also never started a Margolin book I was unable to finish.I’m giving Worthy Brown’s Daughter 3 stars. It’s not good, but it’s not bad. It’s not fascinating, but it’s not boring. There was a couple interesting plot twists but by and large, it was predictable.I give Mr. Margolin credit, as I’m sure he spent a bulk of time researching it. The details are good. He gives you a strong sense of what life was like and how the judicial system operated in Oregon in 1865.So, if you’re looking for a decent read, a time killer, this is a good one to fill that void.

It's only an inch deep, but it's a mile long. No real substance, but an exciting, fun story.

There are a few things going on in this book and they are all interesting.

Good but not great. Based loosely on a true legal case in early Oregon.
