About book Word After Word After Word (2010)

A total gem! This is the perfect read-aloud to share with a class of primary students to talk about writing - stories and poetry. Patricia MacLachlan slips into the role of an author who spends time with a class of fourth grade students to help them hear the "whispered words", i.e. to help them find their own voice in writing, connecting with it to their own stories and thereby changing their lives. this book will surely inspire every young writer - or help students who do not think of themselves as writers discover that they are writers too! There are some beautiful sentences/phrases in the book, e.g. "you write to participate... to find out what is going to happen", "we all have a place where we begin", and "writing is brave". Highly recommended! Lovely, simple little read about the power of words and writing. I especially enjoyed this after reading the comments by the author at the end, where she talks about that this boos was written after requests about what it was like to be a writer. Instead of writing an essay, she wrote a children's fiction book to describe it. I appreciated that she did it the way she always does it best. Again, its a very simple, short book, but I think it makes some very good points about writing, without being pushy or overly complicated.

I don't know that it accomplished what it set out to accomplish, and it wasn't terribly interesting.

3.5. For a much younger audience than I imagined. Interesting, but simple.
