I love how Maddy Barone links her characters throughout this series and keeps their story going from one book to another. I'm so glad that she's came back an given us some insight on Connie's & Des' story.Independently strong characters these two are, with unselfish ways that give so much of their time caring for others. Who will care for them in their lonely hours of needing someone!? This couple is destined for one another and that makes for a true mated pair. So much alike in ways that count, but can they let go of their overprotective, domineering ways to finally seek solace in one another's arms!? This book is a must read, just as the other ones are in this series! Maddy Barone wins me over again and again with her wonderful stories! Thank you Ms. Barone for your incredible books, I look forward to more of this series and now I'm impatiently waiting for Wolf's Vengeance! I am so glad to finally have Des and Connie's story! The book is nicely fleshed out and very engaging. Connie is so strong, determined and focused. The women under her care are her priority. Her focus is making sure that they are safe, protected and that no one interferes with them. She is also afraid and a little broken, with a fierce determination to never let anyone see those parts of her.Des is a wonderful hero. He loves Connie and proves it by never asserting his mate claim. She has told everyone that she will never marry and Des respects her word. He stands as her protector without ever asking for more...until fate steps in. Connie admits to herself that she's more than half in love with Des long before he offers her a bargain. Connie’s turnaround is believable. She's apprehensive to acknowledge her feelings though because of her past. She believes that you have to work hard to attain what you want. Her career was fought for, her relationship with her fiance took 3 years, her leadership with the women is a constant struggle with the women as well as the patriarchal attitudes of the men etc. Our current society says that love takes lots of time to come to fruition and she totally buys into that. On top of everything else she still feels the loss of her fiance Paul. The pain from his loss and her behavior following his death invoke guilt. She compares the empty sex she had then and applies it to the possibility of sex with Des. She deals with pain, guilt and shame, until faced with the very real possibility of Des dying. It's the old adage that you don't know what you've got until it's (possibly) gone.The author tapped into the very intense attack on the wolf Den. The intense emotions that Des poured out into Connie's "safe keeping" afterward felt very real. His grief, anguish and loss came through clearly. Their interaction throughout the scene show the strength of their connection and the depth that their love and commitment has grown to. Each is willing to take a chance and the rewards are far beyond what they imagined. I can't wait to see what their lives together bring as they are revisited in future books. I absolutely know that they will have their happily ever after. It would be wonderful to get a glimpse of the family they create; children and pack. I want to see how they effect Kearney and the communities around them. I want to know how will they adjust to their women leaving the nest. Well done Maddy!Adult situations
