About book Without Their Permission: How The 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed (2013)
The book was a nice illustration of the saying, "you can't afford not to start a company in your 20's," especially online. Many of the ways I had thought Ohanian had contributed to the company were not the case(never coded or worked on the back end) but worked the front end. Maybe its my ignorance but a lot of the tasks Ohanian does at Reddit seem managerial but done with the touch of a young dude. During the first portion of the book the timeline of Ohanian's life up to reddit was nice background info but learning about the company was the most interesting segment of the book. If you never knew what goes into a startup, or want a quick survey of how the Internet has democratized business, politics, and society - this is a great place to start. Alexis demystifies much of what makes a startup succeed, acknowledges the importance of luck, and writes with an urgency that makes you want to act.Even if you know much of the source material, you'll learn new things - about reddit's early days, about the beginning of Y Combinator, about Congress's attempts to fast - track SOPA, and more.Glad I read it.
