This is a book that I never would have picked up on my own. I have to admit, I judged that poor cover and thought it would be nothing more than a sentimental, sappy love story. I was pleasantly surprised. I think the story is well written and the plot is clear. I felt the story focused on the stronger elements of overcoming hardship, being a good person in spite of what happens than whether or not the characters will kiss. I admit there were parts of this book I couldn't help but smirk at, simply because I am that kind of person. This is a genre I generally don't stroll into (and doubt I will return to anytime soon), but it is nice to see that there are good authors to make up for some of the mind numbing, awful stuff I read as an ill-informed youth guided by peer pressure. I was very hesitant to read this story. I've grown tired of the conversion/pioneer stories, and I feared this might turn into one. However, I was pleasantly surprised and ended up really enjoying the book. The whole pioneer/conversion slant was definitely not the direction this book took. The bulk of the story focuses on Annie and Evan's relationship, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching that grow. The backstory on Welsh coal mining in the 19th century was fascinating, but at the same time the author held back enough that it didn't get boring. She balanced historical facts with the fictional story line beautifully.I plowed through this book in a day, and enjoyed every minute of it.
