Honestly, I hated the book and loved it at the same time. At first, I felt quite horrible because my weight was nowhere near what hers was and I loathed that because I wanted to be that thin, feel as good as she seemed. But throughout the book I realized that she was slowly killing herself. Her best friend died because of an eating disorder and it seemed like Lia was going to die the same way. This book sends such an amazing message to anyone who reads it, telling them it gets better and it doesn't always have to be awful. Lia realized what she was doing to herself in the end and stopped it from happening, instead saving herself from what would've been another tragic death due to girls wanting to be thin and the skinniest. Overall, this book is probably one of the best i've read in a long time. The writing style is amazing and you get hooked to it, you can barely put the book down to go and do something because you just want to read more and more. The book is quite triggering in some parts, but at the end it was a happy ending for Lia, unlike most books and stories about this topic. Being inside Lia's head was actually quite terrifying, because you felt like it was you going through this, not her which just makes it that bit more amazing. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who has or been through an eating disorder or just people interested in it. The book was brutal but completely beautiful, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I decided to read Wintergirls because almost all of the girls in my class had read it, and it seemed interesting.I loved the way the Laurie Halse Anderson used character revelations to show every thought that the main character Lia had. this also helped to show Lias growth throughout the book.At the end of the book, when she final understands her situation for herself, and not just based on her parents, her deceased "friend" Cassie, or her Therapist she says: "There's no magic cure, no making it all go away forever. there are only small steps upward, an easier day, and unexpected laugh, a mirror that doesn't matter anymore. I am thawing." (Anderson 278) This quote is important because at the beginning of the book, it seemed that Lia had no hope and did not want to get better. She had called herself a "Wintergirl" along with Cassie, not realizing that she was different. In Attempt of helping Cassie, she lost her way and became just like her. But now that she has decided to move on, Lia had seen that she was worth working on.
