About book Wild Life (2011)

This was a very good book and I liked a lot. If you are like me you like hunting, this is a great book about that. He goes through a hunters safety course and gets his license. He is supposed to go on a hunting trip but then has to go live with his grandparents in North Dakota. He is very upset but ends up getting a good friend. It is a good book on survival and on hunting, teaches you a few skills. I loved this book but I also love hunting so it is kinda self explanatory. There are a lot of things to like about this book. I appreciated that the foolishness of main character's actions were never glossed over, even as a reader was made to understand the appeal of them. I liked how things turned out with the dog (no spoilers). The writing style was crisp and easy. But what I can't get past -- and what I won't get past -- are the excuses made for the character of the grandfather. The death of his son in Vietnam is held up as reasonable justification for 34 straight years of emotional abuse doled out to his wife, daughter, and now, grandson. "Isn't it terrible that the loss made him so sad that he had no choice but to destroy everyone around him." And then the events of the book completely fix him in five short days. No, sorry. That's not how it works, and I don't have much patience for books that suggest otherwise. Not recommended, which is a shame.
