About book Who Was Dr. Seuss? (2011)

Non-Fiction/Informational TextThis is an informational book on Dr. Seuss, or Theodore Geisel's life and how he became the author that he did. It starts right from the beginning of his life and talks about his parents, where he grew up, and where he went to college. It is important for students to remember that famous people like Dr. Seuss have more to their life than just being an author. This non-fiction story is designed as a chapter book with some pictures, but it does not have a lot of photographs, charts, tables, or information sections like many informational texts do. This one is also part of the "Who Was" series, so students may be able to continue using these types of books as references in biographies of other famous people. I really enjoyed this book and would love to have it in my classroom. Most students know who Dr. Seuss is and know of his books, but few probably know his history and why he began writing such unique stories. Dr. Seuss is widely celebrated, and on his birthday every year, schools celebrate Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss's love for reading and writing for children. This book is written on a level that students in grades 3-5 would understand and relate to, and hopefully enjoy. It is a great informational text and is also a biography of this author's life. I am not Dr Seuss's biggest fan but I can see the appeal of the books to young children and I remember my youngest being chuffed to bits when he could read a book - yes it was one of Dr Seuss's and it was one of his books I left in my oldest sons uni room when we dropped him off to start the next chapter in his life.It was interesting to read about his life - I had vaguely heard bits about him but actually did not know he had done so much. I was supposed to be reading it to see which kids it would appeal to in school but ended up enjoying it myself. It was included on a 'ReadforMyschool' website which is encouraging children to read books.
