About book Whitey Bulger: America's Most Wanted Gangster And The Manhunt That Brought Him To Justice (2013)
This book is what I would presume to be the ultimate, if not seminal, biographical accounting of the life and criminal exploits of James "Whitey" Bulger. The book, "Whitey Bulger, america's most wanted gangster and the manhunt that brought him to justice", written by two Boston journalists, Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy, is a thorough account of the feared Boston mobster and infamous organized crime figure who was recently captured and brought to justice after 16 years in hiding. The authors portray the ignominious relationship between the FBI and Bulger and the conspiratorial machinations that empowered him to operate in the Boston underworld with unfettered authority and without fear of law enforcement accountability. The actions of the FBI to protect Bulger as a confidential informant and to obstruct other police agencies in it's zeal to topple the mafia, contributed two decades of mistrust between the plethora of Boston law enforcement authorities pursuing him. Whiteys brother Bill, a powerful political figure in Massachusetts government, presents an interesting parallel as the family Bulger would control the political world and underworld of Boston. For those who have been to Boston, the book is also an opus tribute to "Southie" (south Boston). At 430 pages, it is not a light read, but not overwhelming either. For those who may prefer an easier alternative, watch the movie "The Departed", which is loosely based on the Bulger story. Strongly recommend this one. I hate to use the adage that "truth is stranger than fiction" when reviewing a book. But how else could you describe the life of Whitey Bulger? The man who controlled the Boston underworld for years; who corrupted the FBI; who committed murders with the tacit approval of the bureau; who eluded the FBI longer than Osama Bin Laden. Gotti and Capone had nothing on Bulger. After reading Whitey's story these guys look like the common thugs that they actually were.
