About book White Mary, The (2008)

I loved this book entirely! The fact that it's about a traveler journalist who does for a living what I want to do for a living, makes it much more interesting. It's straight-forward, no sugar-coat for the atrocity around the world. My favorite thing about this book was the sense of honesty and feeling behind it...knowing that the author has seen first-hand all the horror portrayed in the book, makes it so much real and touching. If I ever had a doubt about wanting to be a war journalist, it's gone now. Marika Vecera was something most of the indigenous residents of the PNG interior had never seen before, a “wait meri”; local Pidgin for a white woman. This exciting adventure novel about a seasoned war correspondent’s search for evidence of the death or possible survival of her life-long hero is spectacular. Her desperate struggle into the interior of Papua New Guinea is not only a quest for her missing paladin but also a possible answer as to why she has become so singularly obsessive about facing death as a way of life. She questions but never deviates from her course, whatever it may be. This ultimate spiritual journey may not provide all of the answers but it keeps her and the reader in pursuit of deeper issues and revelations that examine human love as well as death. This is an outstanding novel that kept me enthralled with each turn of the page.
