About book Where You Least Expect It (2011)

This should have landed on my DNF pile because it was a struggle to get through. The way the 3rd person POV was done made the characters distant and hard to connect with. The use of pronouns like him and his would have seriously cut down the constant repetition of the character's names. Remember when Titanic came out and everyone made of fun of the constant "Jack! Rose!"? I think they said each other's names 75 times each in the movie. Well, this book beats that number by chapter 5. The names Matt and Christian are forever embedded in my frontal lobe. Seriously, what does Durango have against pronouns? I felt there was a lot of unnecessary detail that did not add to the story at all and the sex scenes were so frequent and repetitive that I eventually just skimmed them. Spice it up a bit! Several plot points were never resolvedf and at the end I was just left with a feelig of, what was the point? I really enjoyed this slice-of-life novel about an ex-Army computer geek and cute barista. Matt Halston is coming off a bad break-up – with a woman – and his friend Sam is constantly trying to fix him up with any available women they know. Matt isn’t interested, but when he meets Christian Flannery at a party he feels an instant connection with the other man. What begins as friendship quickly builds to more than that and Matt must re-evaluate his sexuality in light of his attraction to Christian. What I really liked about Where You Least Expect it was that in this Gay-For-You story, there wasn’t a lot of angst and drama about Matt’s coming out. Yes, he had doubts, but they were dealt with matter-of-factly. At the core of this book was the slow build-up of Matt and Christian’s relationship and how they deal with things as a couple. As a reader who appreciates non-angsty novels, this was a charming break from high drama, intrigue and murder/mayhem.Even though I have never read any of M. Durango’s books before, I am making note of this author. I truly enjoyed their style, wit and way with words. They go on my auto-buy list from now on. Recommended.Dark Divas Reviews
