About book Where The Moon Isn't (2013)

This may have spoilers because its better to go into the book not knowing anything. And that is what I did. I had some expectations but overall I knew this book was worth 5 stars even when I was half way through. I read it extremely quickly because I was so engrossed in the story and the main characters life that I just sat and read for a few hours. Overall it is a very dark novel because of the issues it deals with but I am in complete awe of Nathan Filer's writing style. The layout/format of the 'chapters' were unique and wonderful to this style if writing and to me it was a beautiful book to read. There's a sense of foreboding, of unease throughout this book, a sense that something bad is going to happen. Or that we're about to read some other bad thing. Because early on in the book we know that one of the characters dies, a death which destroys the rest of the family, in so many ways. The absolute destruction slowly unfolds. I wanted to go and sit in a cafe on my own and read this book till I finished it. I wanted to be away from everyone else, but also surrounded by people and warmth. Perhaps it was a reflection of the isolation of the central character. Or perhaps I just wanted to finish the book instead of being at work.
