This was a beautiful, gently told story. I felt nourished and uplifted all through it. I am not a gardener and don't have a lot of patience...so I gained a great respect for the gentle persistence it takes to create beauty in a flower garden. I also was encouraged by her story of repetitive floods and trials, and how each time she got up, wiped herself off and started again. Then the last time, when she just couldn't get up another time, all the love and kindness she had shared throughout her life came back to her to lift her up again. So many beautiful lessons about life, family and pursuing your passions. I was giddy to find out that Hulda Klager's garden is only an hour from me. I can't wait to take my Mother in law next spring! I like it. It started too slow and easy but became very meaningful and interesting for me. It is set in Woodland , Washington around 1900-1950. Historical fiction of Hulda Lugar , wife and mother on a farm who began to improve lilacs and other flowers. For instance she developed different color shade and numbers of pedals on lilic blooms. She outlived her immediate family, was a woman who proceeded into areas off limits or thought to be for women. Lugars, garden, replanted and thrived after flooding late in her life and still remains on the property where the family farmed, in Southwestern Washington near the Lewis River.
