Marisa is a brilliant Hispanic American whose family is entrneched in the Mexican culture where the women have very little education, get married young, and have babies. Family loyalty is very important and everyone, even the children are expected to contribute money to the household as soon as they are old enough to work. Marisa wants something different for her life and sees education, AP Calculus, and a supportive teacher as her way out. Her family obligations and parents who see college as a way for her to delay working to support the family are obstacles to Marisa's dream. I loved this book and think that every Hispanic American girl with the American dream of a college education and career should read this book because it is so inspirational! This book was a nice book to read. The theme was mainly on the relationship between Marisa and her parents. Like most teenagers, Marisa had different dreams from her parents. Marisa's parents does not value education as much as Marisa. This makes in very hard to do her college applications. Marisa's dad thinks "College is useless and just another place to get away from work." Marisa wants to show that she won't have a crappy life like her other family members, she wants to go to college and get a good job. After many conflicts Marisa chooses to be a better daughter over her own needs.This makes me admire her a lot because as a teenager it is very hard for us to put wants over ours especially thinking that it should be us controlling our lives; however, Marisa did the exact opposite.
