About book Wesley The Remarkable Story Of An Owl (2009)
I loved this book. It was a quick, engaging read. Stacey O'Brien, a biologist, raises a barn owl in her room, for years. The trials and tribulations of their life journey, plus their discoveries and joys, kept me flying through the pages. It was so interesting to learn so much about barn owls, like how, as an adult, he still loved to play. Days after I've finished, I'm still in awe of Ms. O'Brien's dedication and their story. I find myself in the bedroom wondering what it would be like to have an owl flying across the room and landing on a curtain rod. Fascinating! Biologist Stacey O’Brien adopted Wesley, a baby barn owl with an injured wing who could not have survived in the wild. Over the next nineteen years, O’Brien studied Wesley’s strange habits with both a tender heart and a scientist’s eye—and provided a mice-only diet that required her to buy the rodents in bulk (28,000 over the owl’s lifetime). She watched him turn from a helpless fluff ball into an avid communicator and a gorgeous, gold-and-white macho adult with a heart-shaped face who preened in the mirror and objected to visits by any other males to “his” house. Good book.
