I have mot read the series, just one or two out of the 13. This book is enough to have me go back and read them all. I love the easy writing style, the descriptive passages but, most of all, the development of all the characters (even in a couple of books). This story revealed a bit more of London areas, the issues of colour and the difficulties of full integration. I am now on the search for #14 just so I can see the future for Charlotte. This is yet another spectacular book in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series. The villain in this book is quite a slimeball! In the other books, although the murderers are not good people, there is usually some logical explanation about why they did what they did. Maybe they killed in the heat of passion and maybe it was an accident. But, in THIS book, the villain is completely morally bankrupt. I enjoyed the interaction of the usual characters and the development of the relationship between Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. I also enjoyed the reentry of several other characters from previous books. I am giving it four stars. It is great, but it's not my favorite of all of the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books.
