About book War Of The Whales: A True Story (2014)

Fascinating study of the development of active sonar by the Navy, which sends out appallingly loud bursts of noise into the ocean -- and kills whales, fish, and just about anything alive within hearing. The thing is that sound carries incredibly far underwater. So a Navy training exercise might kill 11,000 marine mammals and fish, for example. Their numbers, not environmentalists'. The actual numbers are probably obscenely higher. The book is alternately heartbreaking and stirring as it follows the fortunes of some courageous souls who fight the battle against this indiscriminate slaughter of wonderful animals. A must-read for anyone who cares about the environment and other species. If you are expecting this book to be a story of the aquatic goliaths battling each other with machine guns and lasers, you'll be disappointed. The book is a battle of science and litigation. On one side are the beaked whales and other marine mammals. On the other side is the might US Navy. The marine mammals appear to be beaching themselves while fleeing from navy sonar exercises. The navy wavers between denial and no impact from its 200+ decibels machinery. The science part is well done and informative. The legal side is shallow, muddy and rushed. But that does not come until the last third of the book.
